Rhodes Stadium ; Rhodes Stadium is located on the corner of Shallowford Church Road and University Drive on Elon University’s campus in Elon, North Carolina. The stadium, named in honor of Warren “Dusty” and Peggy Rhodes, is home to Phoenix football and lacrosse teams. The stadium was made possibly due to a $2 million donation from the Rhodes family. Between 1949 and 2001, the football team played their home games at Burlington Memorial Stadium at Williams High School, which is off campus and made it difficult for students to support their team. The stadium was the final goal of the Campaign for the Elon Vision, which was launched in 1994. The stadium was the last to be built, since Elon wanted to put academics first, so they constructed McMichael Science Building and Belk Library before moving onto the field. The field in Rhodes stadium, McKinnon Field, is sand based, and the drainage system was installed beneath stone and silica, giving it a percolation rate of 12-14 inches per hour. The field was made possible by a gift from Bob and Ray McKinnon. The grass on the field features Bermuda grass bred specifically for athletics fields and golf courses. In 2007, a Jumbotron screen was installed, enabling fans to see live game action and instant replays. The stadium includes 8,250 seats, with 1,800 reserved for students. The first game scheduled to play at the stadium against Eastern Kentucky University was canceled following the September 11th attacks, so the first official game played in the stadium was Elon vs. North Carolina A&T. The arch that spectators walk under on their way into the game is Theos Arch, and was named in honor of Nick Theos by his friend and former Elon teammate Furman Moseley. The Bell Tower, which is located at the North Athletics Complex, is named in honor of Alan J. White, former Elon Athletics Director.
