نبذة مختصرة : This thesis uses republican political philosophy to analyse several central labour issues, propose institutional responses to the problems addressed and discuss which conceptual tools are necessary to understand them. I analyse workers’ relationship with management and the firm’s directors, as well as workers’ position in the market and the problems associated with precarious work. On the one hand, I argue that workplace democracy is the right model to promote republican freedom within the firm. On the other hand, I argue that workers’ interests are promoted when production is efficient, and the market is coupled with ample bargaining power and institutional resources available to workers. At the same time, discussing labour issues allows us to contrast different republican views and illustrate that republican theory enables us to systematise our evaluative judgements on labour issues correctly.
