Ueno Hikoma, un portraitiste à la fin du shôgunat

En octobre 1862, quelques mois avant l'arrivée de Felice Beato à Yokohama, Ueno Hikoma, qui avait à peine 25 ans, ouvrait à Nagasaki le premier studio photo japonais. Ueno avait reçu du médecin hollandais de Dejima, Pompe, quelques cours de photographie. Le passage à Nagasaki du mystérieux photographe français P. Rossier en 1860 lui permit de compléter ses connaissances pratiques. Son studio vit défiler, dans les années 1860, les samouraïs qui participèrent activement à la restauration de Meiji : Sakamoto Ryôma, Takasugi Shinsaku, Itô Hirobumi... La Bibliothèque Nationale de France conserve de nombreux albums de photographie japonaise. Parmi eux a été récemment identifié un album d'Ueno Hikoma datant des débuts de son studio. In October 1862, a few months prior to Felice Beato's arrival in Yokohama, Ueno Hikoma, a mere 25 years old, opened the first Japanese photography studio in Nagasaki. Ueno received a few photography lessons from the Dutch physician of Dejima, Pompe. The stay of the mysterious French photographer in 1860 allowed Ueno to complete his practical training. In the 1860s, samorai who participated in the Meiji Restoration : Sakamoto Ryôma, Takashugi Shinsaku, Itô Hirobumi and others all visited his studio. The National Library of France houses numerous Japanese photograph albums. Among them, an album was recently identified as belonging to Ueno Hikoma, which dates back to the opening days of his studio. This article introduces Ueno and this album.
