Baggrund: Overvægt udgør en stor sundhedsrisiko for hunde og reducerer både livskvalitet og leve- tid. Flere studier har påvist en høj prævalens af overvægt blandt hunde (20-40%) og fundet at faktorer som alder, race, neutralisation, fodringspraksis og motionsvaner spiller en væsentlig rolle. Ingen stu- dier har endnu undersøgt kropssammensætning, fodringspraksis og motionsvaner hos hunde i Nuuk. Formål: Formålet med dette studie var at kortlægge kropssammensætning hos privatejede hunde i Nuuk og undersøge sammenhænge med fodringspraksis, motionsvaner samt ejer- og hunderelaterede faktorer for at belyse mulige årsagssammenhænge. Metoder: Studiet blev udført som et prospektivt tværsnitstudie af 107 privatejede hunde i Nuuk. Kropssammensætningen blev vurderet ved body condition score (BCS), muscle condition score (MCS) og hudfoldstykkelse (HFT) målt fire steder med Harpenden Skinfold Caliper (HSC). Derud- over blev hundenes vægt (BW) og skulderhøjde registreret. Et spørgeskemaet blev besvaret af ejerne og indeholdt oplysninger om fodring, motionsvaner samt ejer- og hunderelaterede faktorer. Den sta- tistiske analyse indebar intraklasse korrelationskoefficient (ICC) og analyse af sammenhænge mel- lem variabler ved hjælp af parametriske og non-parametriske tests. Resultater: Kønsfordeling i studiepopulationen var 55% hanner og 45% tæver. Af hannerne var 29% neutraliserede sammenlignet med 77% af tæverne. Medianalderen var 6 år. Prævalensen af overvægt var 62,6%. Tæver havde højere BCS end hanner (median: 7 vs. 6) og neutraliserede hanner havde højere BCS end intakte hanner (median: 6 vs. 5,25). Vandring var associeret med en reduktion i BCS på et point. Gåtursvarighed og -frekvens, løbeture og muligheden for at være fritgående omkring bolig udenfor var associeret med øget HFT for flere målelokationer. Konklusion: Prævalensen af overvægt var højere end rapporteret i de fleste tidligere studier. Over- vægt fandtes ikke relateret til foder eller ejerrelaterede
Background: Overweight is a major health risk for dogs and reduces both quality of life and lifespan. Multiple studies have reported a high prevalence (20-40%) of overweight dogs and proven that fac- tors such as age, breed, neuter status, feeding practices and exercise play an important role. At this point no studies have investigated body composition, feeding practices and excersice habits among dogs in Nuuk. Objectives: The objective of this study was to investigate the body composition of privately owned dogs in Nuuk and compare it to feeding practices, exercise habits and factors related to the owner and dog in order to elucidate potentiel causal relationships. Methods: This study is a prospective cross-sectional study of 107 privately owned dogs in Nuuk. Body composition was evaluated using body condition score (BCS), muscle condition score (MCS), and skinfold thickness (HFT) measured at four sites with a Harpenden Skinfold Caliper (HSC). Body weight (BW) and shoulder height of the dogs were also noted. The questionnaire was answered by the owner and included information on feeding practices, exercise and owner- and dog-related factors. Statistical analyses included intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and associations between varia- bles using parametric and non-parametric models. Results: In the study population, 55% of the dogs were males and 45% were bitches. Among the males, 29% were neutered compared to 77% of the bitches. The median age was 6 years. The preva- lence of overweight was 62.6%. Bitches had a higher BCS than males (median: 7 vs. 6), and neutered males had a higher BCS than intact males (median: 6 vs. 5.25). For each additional year of age, BCS increased by 0.15 points and MCS by 0.02 points. Hiking was associated with a reduced BCS by 1 point. Walking duration and frequency, running exercise and being able to run freely outside the home was associated with an increased HFT for multiple measurement sites. Conclusions: The
