Samstämmighet mellan svenska hundägares uppfattning om hundens kroppshull och hullbedömning gjord av djurhälsopersonal

Agreement between Swedish dog owners´ perception of their dog´s body composition and assessment made by animal health-care personnel

Övervikt hos hund är ett vanligt förekommande problem som kan leda till negativa konsekvenser för hundens hälsa och välmående. En global prevalens av övervikt eller fetma hos hund har estimerats till 22–40%. Hundägaren tycks inte alltid vara medveten om att hunden faktiskt är överviktig eller är inte införstådd med konsekvenserna av hundens övervikt. Tidigare forskning har kunnat påvisa att hundägare tenderar att underskatta kroppshullet på sin hund, speciellt om hunden är överviktig. Flertalet studier har även påvisat en rad riskfaktorer för övervikt hos hund som är relaterade till hundägaren respektive hunden. Syftet med detta kandidatarbete i djuromvårdnad var att undersöka svenska hundägares uppfattning om sin hunds kroppshull och hur denna uppfattning överensstämmer med en hullbedömning gjord av djurhälsopersonal. Vidare undersöktes om hundägarna blev bättre i sin hullbedömning efter information om en hullbedömningsskala. Det undersöktes även om det fanns faktorer som påverkade hundägarens hullbedömning respektive hundens kroppshull. Via fysiska träffar fick hundägaren skatta sin hunds kroppshull förutsättningslöst (före utbildning). Därefter fick hundägaren information om en niogradig hullbedömningsskala och fick sedan hullbedöma sin hund. Slutligen utförde djurhälsopersonalen sin hullbedömning. I studien deltog 64 hundägare med totalt 82 hundar. För de statistiska analyserna delades hundägarna in i grupper med hänsyn till ålder, hundvana och definierad könsidentitet och faktorer som relaterade till hundarna inkluderade kön (tik/hane), ålder (X år) och kastrationsstatus (kastrerad/intakt). Data bearbetades deskriptivt och med kopplade statistiska analyser. Resultatet visade att hundägare tenderade att underskatta kroppshullet på både sin normalviktiga och överviktiga hund och detta var tydligast i skattningen före utbildning. Overweight in dogs is a common problem, which can lead to negative consequences for the dog’s health and well-being. A global prevalence of overweight dogs has been estimated to 20–44%. Dog owners do not always seem to be aware of their dog being overweight or the consequences of the condition. Previous research has shown that dog owners tend to underestimate the body composition of their dog, especially if their dog is prominently overweight. Studies have also linked risk factors for overweight in dogs to factors relating to the owner as well as to the dog. The aim of this bachelor’s thesis in veterinary nursing was to investigate Swedish dog owners' perception of their dogs’ body composition and whether the perception correlated with a body condition assessment made by animal health-care personnel. It was further investigated if the dog owner's body assessment was improved after information about a Body Condition Score (BCS) chart. Furthermore, factors that affected the owner's BCS assessment as well as factors affecting the dog's BCS were investigated. In the study, firstly, the dog owner estimated their dog’s body composition before education. After this, the dog owners received information from a nine-point BCS chart to assess body composition of their dog. Finally, the animal health-care personnel made their BCS assessment. The study included 64 dog owners with 82 dogs. For the statistical analyses, dog owners were categorised into groups based on age and previous dog ownership and the dogs were categorized for the variables sex (female/male), age (x age cateogires) and neutering status (neutered/intact). Data were processed descriptively and in statistical analyses. The results showed that dog owners tended to underestimate the body composition of both their normal-weight and overweight dogs and mainly in the assessment before education.
