Analyse typologique des profils de violence familiale vécue à l’adolescence

Research Framework: To date, few studies have focused on adolescents who are victims of violence within their families.Objectives : This study aims to identify patterns of family violence experienced by Quebec adolescents and determine their characteristics.Methodology : Hierarchical cluster and logistic regression analyses were conducted on a population sample of 1,299 parents of adolescents (ages 13-17) from the latest survey by the Institut de la Statistique du Québec (Clément et al., 2019). The questionnaire, administered by phone, documented different forms of violence (exposure to domestic violence, psychological aggression, physical violence, neglect) as well as the characteristics of the young people, their parents, and their socioeconomic context (e.g., depressive symptoms and substance use among parents, parental stress, poverty, social support).Results : The analyses show the presence of five profiles defined according to the forms of violence experienced (parents defined as distant, violent, neglectful, disengaged, and normative). These profiles differ based on factors such as parental substance use issues, parental stress, and social support.Conclusions : The study provides an overview of the violence experienced in Quebec by young people in their family and identifies certain risk factors.Contributions : It highlights the importance of paying attention to the experiences of adolescent families, which are often overlooked, and of continuing efforts to support them.
