نبذة مختصرة : Older adults in the United States face barriers to accessing information across multiple contexts, including during public emergencies. This study aimed to (1) identify where culturally and linguistically diverse older adults get information about extreme weather, (2) identify barriers therein, and (3) explore the role of trusted information sources. Eleven focus groups were conducted in nine languages with adults aged 62 and older in a Midwestern metropolitan city with financially disadvantaged Senior Companions volunteers (N = 56) attending a monthly in-service training. Data were analyzed with iterative thematic and constant comparative analysis using structural, open, and pattern coding. Fifty-five percent of participants were immigrants or refugees; all had annual incomes under $15,000, and 86% lived alone. Family members, television, phone alerts, and community agencies were the most frequently reported information sources. Challenges to obtaining weather-related information included language and technology barriers, absent social networks, weather unpredictability, and inadequate knowledge or experience. Participants trusted information sources based on consistency, authority, and rapport, despite stated difficulties discerning trustworthiness. The importance of receiving communication in their native language, translation services, and emergency weather preparedness training was noted. Findings highlight diverse older adults’ informational needs and communication preferences regarding extreme weather events.
