نبذة مختصرة : The research goal of the dissertation is the identification and the definition of the relations emerging between print and electronic books when consumed as media formats. The examined period is 2000 – 2019. The territorial scope includes the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Spain, Sweden and Bulgaria. The introductory literature review is dedicated to the scholarly interpretation of print and electronic books as media formats by foreign and Bulgarian researchers. The empirical part includes analyses of international book market studies and sociological research as well as the author’s own sociological research on the readers’ attitude towards print and electronic books in Bulgaria. Two theoretical models are suggested: a model of print and electronic books functions and a model of the intermedia relations between print and electronic books. Three types of intermedia relations have been identified: antagonism, alternativity and complementarity. The following definition has been formulated: The intermedia relations between print and electronic books emerge when they are consumed by the reader, who makes a media choice based on subjective perception of their specific functions as media formats. In conclusion the author argues that print and electronic books transform themselves and adapt to the media environment as two separate media formats by complementing their specific functions in the satisfaction of readers’ needs. ; Целта на дисертационния труд е да се установят и дефинират отношенията, които възникват между печатните и електронните книги при тяхното потребление като медийни формати.
