نبذة مختصرة : This study investigates the socio-economic impact of Self-Help Groups (SHGs) under the National Rural Livelihoods Mission (NRLM) with a comparative analysis between Nongstoin CRD Block in Meghalaya and SHGs of 10 other states in India. The study explored SHGs contribution to women empowerment, income generation, financial inclusion, and community development. Both qualitative and quantitative methods like chi-square tests were used to evaluate differences in income-generating activities, reasons for joining SHGs, economic improvements, and challenges faced by members of SHGs. The findings reveal significant regional variations in SHG participation and outcomes, with Nongstoin showing strong engagement in agriculture and business start-ups. The study concluded that SHGs did play an important role in enhancing rural livelihoods, especially for women, by fostering financial independence, skill development, and social capital. However, regional disparities highlight the need for context-specific strategies to maximize SHG effectiveness.
