Linguistique et droit dans l’étude du Code de Gortyne, trente ans après la publication de Nomima

À l’occasion de la trentième année de la publication des deux volumes de Nomima, les deux auteurs de cet article, qui ont bien connu Henri van Effenterre, veulent souligner l’importance durable de son travail sur la Crète antique et, en particulier, sur la grande inscription qu’on appelle le Code de Gortyne (IC IV, 72). Dans la première partie (A – L’approche linguistique) Monique Bile trace d’abord rapidement un profil de la découverte de l’inscription et des premiers commentaires (en particulier de langue française) ; ensuite elle souligne, par des exemples significatifs, l’importance de poursuivre l’étude linguistique d’un texte écrit dans un dialecte qui souvent rend difficile la compréhension de son contenu. Dans la deuxième partie (B – La dimension juridique) Alberto Maffi passe en revue les contributions de van Effenterre (et occasionnellement de sa femme Micheline) aux Symposia de droit grec, et d’autres articles publiés dans Minos, le recueil de ses écrits, en essayant de préciser sa façon de concevoir la dimension juridique du texte du Code. ; On the occasion of the thirtieth year since the publication of the two volumes of Nomima, the two authors of this article, who knew Henri van Effenterre well, want to highlight the lasting importance of his work on ancient Crete and, in particular, on the large inscription known as the Code of Gortyne (IC IV, 72). In the first part (A – The linguistic approach), Monique Bile first briefly outlines the discovery of the inscription and the first commentaries (particularly in French); then she underlines, through significant examples, the importance of pursuing the linguistic study of a text written in a dialect which often makes it difficult to understand its content. In the second part (B – The legal dimension), Alberto Maffi reviews van Effenterre’s (and occasionally his wife Micheline’s) contributions to the Symposia of Greek Law, and other articles published in Minos, the collection of his writing, trying to clarify his way of conceiving the legal dimension of ...
