this research aimed to understand the role of women in the Brazilian civil-military dictatorship, individually and collectively, based on the invisibility of their participation in the most diverse areas, and on the importance of the right to memory, truth and justice as emancipatory instruments and as way to break with certain repeated violences. Thus, the central question was formulated as follows: how can the experiences and actions of women during the civil-military dictatorship be understood within the historical and political context of that period? For this end, the bibliographic and exploratory method as well as qualitative analysis was used. The starting point was the understanding that reflections on violent regimes refer to a male world, making women’s protagonism invisible. Thus, understanding the forms of female action during that period showed that the role of women on several fronts was very important before, during and after the dictatorial regime (1964-1985). The objective was also to consider how Brazilian transitional justice mechanisms have addressed and drawn the issue of women and how critical thinking in human rights, combined with an intersectional gender perspective, contributes to the construction of emancipatory instruments based on women's human rights. In the end, it was concluded that, regardless of the place women occupied, they transformed the male scenario into a female one, even if patriarchy often prevents this from being recognized. Bringing women's protagonism to light contributes then to the necessary fight against gender-based violence, especially regarding the transitional justice mechanisms still underway in Brazil.
