Breast cancer cases are increasing in South Africa, and many rural women are diagnosed at later stages of the disease. In rural communities, breasts are closely linked to womanhood and femininity, and women with breast cancer often face stigma. The disease is sometimes believed to be caused by witchcraft, sin, or punishment, and traditional practices such as animal sacrifices, herbal remedies, and ancestral prayers are used instead of medical care. This study interviewed 22 rural South African women to understand the sociocultural factors affecting breast cancer screening. The findings showed that women’s screening behaviours are influenced by psychological factors, daily habits, cultural beliefs, and their perceptions of healthcare. To improve screening, health education programs that respect cultural beliefs and involve traditional healers and community leaders are recommended.
