Dissertação de Mestrado em Educação Social, Desenvolvimento e Dinâmicas Locais apresentada à Faculdade de Psicologia e de Ciências da Educação ; Carried out as part of the Master's programme in Social Education, Development and Social Dynamics at the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences of the University of Coimbra, this dissertation was developed in order to understand the management and monitoring of child and youth promotion and protection processes and the actions of technical case managers, knowing that they are influenced by internal and external factors in their intervention.Initially, a number of questions were defined to guide the study and to which we sought answers throughout, relating to the case manager's actions, the formal knowledge and personal skills relevant to their work, the difficulties they encounter during their intervention and the strategies they use to make fathers and mothers more competent and able to face the challenges of parenthood.Contextualised in a Commission for the Protection of Children and Young People in a low-density area of the Central Region of Portugal, the information for this study was gathered essentially by analysing two promotion and protection cases and interviewing a technical case manager in the protection commission, who is also its president. Analysing the information gathered allowed us to learn about the work carried out by the case managers in relation to their roles in the protection committee, as well as the difficulties they encounter during their intervention; we also learned to what extent these difficulties affect the promotion of an effective and preventive intervention in relation to the problems they face.In the field of children and youth in the context of the protection commission, case managers appear to be central figures in contact with children and young people and their families.
