      In the scope of the European Community programming periods, in the context of the central region of Portugal, we can highlight the initiatives supported by Community funds between 1994 and 1999, which sought to respond to the European concerns of territorial cohesion, in particular the valorisation of the cultural and tourist heritage of the region. In the recent past, in the context of the Community Support Framework designated MaisCentro (2007-2013), we have also identified support for action programs for the promotion and enhancement of heritage classified by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization). These programs included material and immaterial project s, to revitalize the Portuguese monasteries classified as UNESCO World Heritage, including the Monastery of Santa Maria de Alcobaça, the Monastery of Santa Maria da Vitoria da Batalha and the Convent of Christ of Tomar. Currently, in the framework of the 2014-2020 Community programming period, financial support is also provided for investments in cultural heritage aimed at promoting the conservation and enhancement of thecultural heritage as an instrument for the sustainability of the territories and their tourist value. In the aim of“Centre Regional Operational Program”, designated as Centro 2020, the valorisation of National Monumentsinscribed in the World Heritage List (UNESCO) and National Monuments were defined as strategic priorities, with their contribution to the local economic dynamism through the creation of employment, wealth and cultural programming network. The beneficiaries of Community funds in this area are the munici palities, the Intermunicipal Communities, the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage, the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Centre, among promoters.
