نبذة مختصرة : Objective: The objective is to provide a detailed protocol for a scoping review aimed at mapping and summarizing studies of word definition (WD) skills in children, in clinical and non-clinical populations. More specifically, the aim is to map which factors have been studied as associated with WD skills. Furthermore, the scoping review will summarize the methodological characteristics of the WD tasks used in the included studies.Introduction: Research on children’s word definitions, mainly focusing on the development of WD skills, but also other associated factors, has mostly been conductedsince the early 1980s although some earlier work exists. Possible associated factors are age, schooling, language exposure and SES, cognitive skills, type of words in the task, but there are gaps in our knowledge on individual variation and interactions. A preliminary search for systematic reviews, scoping reviews or registered protocolsrevealed no previous or ongoing reviews with a similar objective. Inclusion criteria: Studies on internal and external factors related to word definition skills involving mono- and/or bi-/multilingual participants up to 18 years old in clinical and/or typical populations conducted in any setting and published between 1985 and 2024 in English. Methods: Comprehensive literature searches of electronic bibliographic databases will be conducted by an experienced librarian in PsycINFO, CINAHL, MEDLINE and Scopus. Data will be presented using a data extraction form combined with narrative summaries answering the review questions. Keywords: definitional skills; metalinguistic skills; vocabulary depth; language development; cognitive developmentReference:Grenner, Emily; Rosqvist, Ida; Hansson, Kristina (2024).
