نبذة مختصرة : This research centers on the exploration of the energy recovery of municipal solid waste categories through gasification to produce electricity with a focus on Comoros. Our research consisted firstly in determining, at different scales of observation, the potential of solid waste in the Comoros, based on a field survey in two towns of the Grande Comore which are Moroni and Foumbouni. We combined these with demographic, sociological and economic data to extrapolate our results to all the communes and prefectures of the Comoros archipelago. This was completed in determining waste composition according to the observation sites, using the same approach considered for evaluating the waste potential. With our databases established, we set out to evaluate the waste’s physical, chemical and thermal characteristics to highlight its properties for energy recovery. We had to implement an appropriate methodology for estimating the elementary waste and waste composition in the Comoros. Subsequently, we explored the scientific and technological bases of gasification systems, to gain a clear understanding of the energy conversion processes involved, using various physicochemical and thermal models. This enabled us to draw up an inventory of tools for numerical simulation of gasification systems’ structural and functional parameters. In the final stage of our research work, SIZER software was selected to carry out a detailed study of gasifier implementation throughout the Comoros, at the level of the communes and prefectures of the three islands observed. In this way, we are laying the foundations for an energy recovery strategy for solid waste in the specific social and economic context of island environments.
