Ongoing economic development on the western edge of the metropolis of Rio de Janeiro generates socio-environmental impacts for the work of artisanal fishermen. In recent decades a logistical-port axis has been forming around Sepetiba Bay, with undertakings that favor the production and circulation of goods for the international market. Among the existing enterprises in the region we highlight the Port of Itaguaí, Porto Sudeste and the Companhia Siderúrgica do Atlântico, which are part of a wide range of logistic and productive structures installed in the surroundings of Sepetiba Bay since the 1970s. The operation of these enterprises alters the materiality of the territory, directly impacting on the artisanal fishing activity. This article aims to contribute to the environmental debate by problematizing the environmental rationality that has been consolidating around sustainable development. On one hand, the dominant development model mobilizes this environmental rationality, implementing sustainability projects; on the other hand, they act on the territory causing a set of environmental destructions and impacts on the fishing communities of Sepetiba Bay. ; El desarrollo económico actual en el extremo occidental de la metrópoli de Río de Janeiro genera impactos socioambientales en la pesca artesanal. La formación de un eje logístico-portuario en la Bahía de Sepetiba, con empresas como el Puerto de Itaguaí, Porto Sudeste y la Companhia Siderúrgica do Atlântico, desde la década de 1970, ha transformado el territorio, afectando directamente la actividad pesquera. Este artículo examina cómo estas empresas, a pesar de promover proyectos de sostenibilidad, también provocan destrucción ambiental y afectan a las comunidades pesqueras.
