This article examines the work of Jacek A. Koziel who has two master's degrees, a doctorate and a fellowship in analytical chemistry on his resume. His daily job is to sniff pig manure. Koziel is an assistant professor of agricultural and biosystems engineering at Iowa State University and studies things that smell really bad. His latest effort was sniffing methoxypyrazine. The chemical comes from a cocktail used by ladybugs to communicate and defend themselves and is so strong that one teaspoon of it in an Olympic-size swimming pool could be tasted. Koziel is working on trying to neutralize the ladybug taint for the wine growing industry.
