Development is a comprehensive process aimed at improving the living conditions of a population through economic, social, and spatial transformations. In the urban context, this process takes the form of urban development, which involves the organization and planning of cities to meet the needs of their inhabitants. However, the rapid urbanization of the city of Marrakech has encouraged the emergence of informal housing—unregulated constructions often lacking basic infrastructure—thereby exposing the weaknesses of urban planning. This phenomenon challenges the goals of sustainable development, a model that seeks to reconcile economic progress, social inclusion, and environmental respect. Through an analysis of the reality of informal housing in Marrakech, this article aims to examine the causes of informal housing in Marrakech and assess its impacts on the environment, economy, and society, while proposing concrete solutions to integrate this housing into a more sustainable and equitable development model. Le développement est un processus global visant à améliorer les conditions de vie d’une population à travers des transformations économiques, sociales et spatiales. Dans le contexte urbain, ce processus prend la forme du développement urbain, qui concerne l’organisation et l’aménagement des villes pour répondre aux besoins des habitants. Toutefois, l’urbanisation rapide de la ville de Marrakech a favorisé l’apparition de l’habitat informel, c’est-à-dire des constructions non réglementées, souvent dépourvues d’infrastructures de base, révélant ainsi les failles de la planification urbaine. Ce phénomène remet en cause les objectifs du développement durable, un modèle qui cherche à concilier progrès économique, inclusion sociale et respect de l’environnement. À travers l’analyse de la réalité de l’habitat informel à Marrakech.
