Plastic packaging materials used in food packaging are creating a problem in the environment; hence there is a need to explore the alternatives. In this study, efforts were made to develop an active biodegradable film from sago starch and garlic extract, followed by its application for packaging freshly prepared paneer.Storage study was designed by packaging paneer into four different packaging films viz., C (control)-low density polyethylene (LDPE), T1- developed film of sago starch, T2- developed film of sago starch with a coating of edible gum and T3- developed film of sago starch with incorporation of garlic extract and coating of edible gum. An attempt was made to impart functionality to the developed film by incorporating garlic extract. Developed film of sago starch had an average thickness of 0.35 mm, moisture content of 53.22% and water solubility as 75.27%.The microbiology of samples revealed that TPC of packaged paneer showed appreciable results in T3 in comparison to other samples after 3rd day of storage. Yeast and mould count was observed from day 6 in T1 and control however on days 9 and 12, the count was also observed in T2 and T3 samples but the values for T3 were significantly (P<0.05) lower in comparison to control and T1. Psychrophilic count was detected from day 9 in control and T1, whereas on 12th day of storage count was observed in T2 and T3, however again a significantly (P<0.05) lower count was there in T3 in comparison to other samples. Coliform count was not found in the entire study period. Based on the values of microbiological quality of paneer, sago starch based developed film incorporated with garlic extract and coated with edible gum was found superior to other comparatives.
