India celebrates Independence Day as a national holiday. The nation existed as a British colony for 200 years before claiming its independence. Many activists were killed in the centuries-long struggle for Indian autonomy. Finally, in 1947, Britain granted India the right to self-govern. It also created a second country from the region, forming the nation of Pakistan.
