School age children are one of the groups that has presented a significant growth in the number of people with excess body fat. Excess body fat is a risk factor for the development of cardiovascular illness and metabolic syndrome. Therefore, the overweight and obesity contribute to a decrease in children’s qualify of life. Background: Investigating a prevalence of overweight and childhood obesity in schools. Methods: Research, a descriptive exploratory cross-sectional study, was conducted in 586 children between seven to ten years old, at four public schools and two private schools that were randomly selected. The sample was submitted to anthropometric measurements of weight and height. In addition, a questionnaire was applied to the children's parents or legal responsible to assess sociodemographic conditions. Results: 40,5% of the total sample analyzed had excess weight, 22% of this number were overweight and 18,3% were obese. Among the correlation with the sociodemographic data, the correlation between the children’s group and the parent’s BMI was significant (p<0,05). Conclusions: A prevalence of childhood obesity is higher in Ipatinga than in the other related cases in Brazil. The family life habit, therefore, presents itself as the main risk factor for the development of the excess of weight, regardless of monthly family income, educational level and other sociodemographic data.
