The limbic system is a group of structures in the brain. This part of the brain is located below the cerebrum and near the top of the brain stem. The structures in the limbic system include the hypothalamus, hippocampus, and amygdala. Researchers disagree about the exact makeup of the limbic system, but those three parts are commonly included in the system. The limbic system is often associated with emotion and memory, but the parts of the limbic system also play a role in sexual function, motor capabilities, appetite, and more. Damage to the parts of the limbic system can cause problems with memory and with regulating healthy body functions. The various parts of the limbic system are vital for the typical functioning of the human brain.
