The effect of correcting anemia in patients with heart failure: Systematic Review.

Introduction: Evidence suggests that anemia is strongly associated with poor outcomes in heart failure (HF) and may be a marker of poor prognosis. The potential relationship between health related-quality of life (HR-QoL) and anemia has not been adequate assessed in patients with HF. Aim: The aim of the current study is to summarize the existing evidence in regard to the association of corrected anemia and HR-QoL. Methodology: It is a literature systematic review. The search was done in the electronic databases PUBMED, CINAHL and GOOGLE SCHOLAR as in scientific journals as well, using the keywords 'heart failure', 'quality of life', 'anemia', 'Fe supplements', and 'supplements'. It was done during the period of the September 2013 until the end of November 2013, according to predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Date restrictions were not applied. Results: Search extracted 8 studies from Europe, USA, and Asia. The surveys' methodology consisted from observational - retrospective studies, randomized and prospective studies. All studies support that both iron and food supplements improve functional capacity, mobility, and quality of life. In addition the intravenous IV iron is safe and effective and increases hemoglobin and exercise capacity. Conclusions: Consists of hemoglobin correction in patients with HF with erythropoietin and iron. Correcting anemia may improve tolerance in exercise, reduce the symptoms and provide benefits regarding the clinical outcome of patients with HF and anemia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
