Il-Politika fil-films : Prog. 1-17 ; Prog 1 : L-influwenza tal-politika fil-films : Introduzzjoni. In this program Dr Mario Thomas Vassallo gives an introduction to this series about the influence of politics in films ; Prog 2 : Il-films ta' Charlie Chaplin - This second program focuses on the films of Charles Chaplin and the role that politics had in his productions. Guest speaker is Hon. Clyde Puli MP ; Prog 3 : Il-film bijografiku: Elisabeth the Golden Age. This program focuses on the role of politics in the film Elizabeth: The Golden Age which is a 2007 sequel to the 1998 film Elizabeth, directed by Shekhar Kapur and produced by Universal Pictures and Working Title Films. It stars Cate Blanchett in the title role and is a fairly fictionalised portrayal of events during the latter part of the reign of Queen Elizabeth I of England. ; Prog 4 : Titanic. This program focuses mainly on the social classes issue as depicted in the epic film Titanic. Guest speaker of the program is Rev. Dr. Charles Tabone OP, a senior lecturer at the Department for Public Policy at the University of Malta. Titanic is a 1997 American epic romance-disaster film directed, written, co-produced, and co-edited by James Cameron. A fictionalized account of the sinking of the RMS Titanic, it stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet as members of different social classes who fall in love aboard the ship during its ill-fated maiden voyage. ; Prog 5 : L-implikazzjonjiet socjali u politici fil-film Dr Zhivago (1965). Guest speaker and Professor in the Department of Social Policy, Prof Godfrey Pirotta discusses the social and political implications in the film Dr Zhivago of 1965. Doctor Zhivago is a 1965 British-American-Italian epic romantic drama film directed by David Lean and starring Omar Sharif and Julie Christie. It is set in Russia between the years prior to World War I and the Russian Civil War of 1917–1922, and is based on the Boris Pasternak novel of the same name. ; Prog 6 : In-neonażismu u l-politika estrema fil-film tal-1992 American History X. This program explores the neo-nazism and extreme politics in the film American History X with guest Andre Debattista. American History X is a 1998 American crime drama film directed by Tony Kaye, written by David McKenna, and stars Edward Norton, Edward Furlong, Fairuza Balk, Stacy Keach, Elliott Gould, Avery Brooks, Ethan Suplee and Beverly D'Angelo. The film tells the story of two Venice, Los Angeles brothers who become involved in the neo-Nazi movement. The older brother serves three years in prison for voluntary manslaughter, changes his beliefs and tries to prevent his brother from going down the same path. ; Prog 7 : Ir-reliġjon u l-politika, il-fidi u t-tmexxija ta' poplu fi stat sekulari fil-film tal-2005 Kingdom of Heaven. A program highlighting the constant tug of war between politics and religion, faith and the governance of a secular state as portrayed in the 2005 film Kingdom of Heaven. Guest speaker is Edwin Vassallo. ; Prog 8 : Il-kriżi ta' Cuba tal-1962 fil-film Thirteen Days u l-iskandlu ta’ Watergate fil-film Nixon. Dr George Vital Zammit, as this program's guest, comments on the crisis of Cuba of 1962 as portrayed in the 1962 film Thirteen Days and on the Watergate scandal as seen in the film Nixon. Thirteen Days is a 2000 American historical drama-thriller film directed by Roger Donaldson, dramatizing the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962, seen from the perspective of the US political leadership. Nixon: A biographical story of former U.S. president Richard Milhous Nixon, from his days as a young boy to his eventual presidency which ended in shame. ; Prog 9 : Il-gwerra ċivili Amerikana (1660-1865) fil-film Glory (1982). Dr Mario Thomas Vassallo with the help of Simone Chircop from the Department of Public Policy of the University of Malta, explores the issues of the civil war in America as portrayed in the 1989 film Glory. Glory is about Robert Gould Shaw who leads the US Civil War's first all-black volunteer company, fighting prejudices of both his own Union army and the Confederates. ; Prog 10 : Il-piena kapitali: gustizzja jew vendetta? fil-film The Green Mile (1999). Rev. Dr. Charles Tabone, together with presenter Dr Mario Thomas Vassallo, explore the issues raised in the 1999 film The Green Mile, mostly those of capital punishment and the justice system. The Green Mile tells how the lives of guards on Death Row are affected by one of their charges: a black man accused of child murder and rape, yet who has a mysterious gift. ; Prog 11 : L-Olokawst fil-film Schindler's List (1993). The film under review in this program is Schindler's List of 1993 and the portrayal of the holocaust. The film is the story of how, in Poland during World War II, Oskar Schindler gradually becomes concerned for his Jewish workforce after witnessing their persecution by the Nazis. Guest: Ms. Simone Chircop ; Prog 12 : L-isfreġju ambjentali u l-implikazzjonijiet politiċi fil-film Erin Brockovich (2000). Dr Marie Louise Mangion discusses the environmental and political implications in the film Erin Brockovich of 2000. Erin Brockovich is an unemployed single mother who becomes a legal assistant and almost single-handedly brings down a California power company accused of polluting a city's water supply. ; Prog 13 : Il-film Of Gods and Man (2010). The film Of Gods and Men of 2010 is about a group of Trappist monks stationed with an impoverished Algerian community who, under threat by fundamentalist terrorists, must decide whether to leave or stay. The discussion, lead by Prof Edward Warrington, deals with extremism, multi-culturalism and religions together with political and religious violence. ; Prog 14 : Il-kruha tal-gwerra fil-film La vita e' bella (1997). Prof Godfrey Pirotta is invited to comment and analyse the cruelty of war as portrayed in the film La vita è bella (1997) which is about survival in a concentration camp. When an open-minded Jewish librarian and his son become victims of the Holocaust, he uses a perfect mixture of will, humor and imagination to protect his son from the dangers around their camp. ; Prog 15 : Il-films Taljani grotteski u b'laqta satirika li huma msawrin madwar Ugo Fantozzi. Dr George Vital Zammit comments on Italian films with a touch of satire built around the character of Ugo Fantozzi. Ugo Fantozzi is a fictional character, appearing in Italian literature and film, created by Paolo Villaggio. Fantozzi was created in 1968 out of a television program in which Villaggio played a stereotypically unlucky Italian bungler. ; Prog 16 : Il-ġlieda kontra l-iskjavitu fil-film Amistad tal-1997. Amistad (1997) is about a 1839 mutiny aboard a slave ship that is traveling towards the northeastern coast of America. Much of the story involves a court-room drama about the free man who led the revolt. To analyze and comment on the film is guest speaker Colin Borg and the discussion centers around the issue of slavery as depicted in the film. ; Prog 17 : For this last program of this series, Dr Mario Thomas Vassallo together with Ms. Simone Chircop will review various issues in a number of films, namely, The Killing Fields, Laurence of Arabia, Les Miserables, Cider House Rules, Bicentennial Man and Braveheart.
