Seven year old Billy Emmet, of Del. Ray, Florida, namesake and great grand nephew of the late W. L. R. Emmet, unveils memorial plaque honoring this outstanding engineer who was first to apply the electric drive for ships, including the US Navy; a pioneer in designing apparatus for utilities, and the man who built the first turbine to operate from mercury vapor instead of steam. The ceremony took place in Schenectady on October 31, marking the 50th anniversary of the start of General Electric's first turbine generator at Niagara Falls. This turbine is still converting the waters of Niagara into electric power at the Adams station. Standing alongside the youngster is Bryant Baker, well known New York sculptor, who designed the plaque. A duplicate of this plague will be placed in the Naval Academy at Annapolis at a later date. Mr. Emmet was an Annapolis graduate.
