The article discusses a study which assessed whether improved community-based access to life-saving drugs to augment health-facility strengthening programmes can reduce maternal mortality due to post-partum haemorrhage or sepsis using a mathematical model. The mathematical model was used to estimate the effect of potential packages of interventions which include health-facility strengthening, health-facility strengthening combined with improved drug provision via antenatal-care appointments and community health workers and a combination of both. The study observed lowest risk deliveries in health facilities in the implementation of the model.
