Velhos 'cristãos-novos' no sertão paraibano

Devido às tradições culturais brasileiras, sobretudo no Nordeste, onde o cadinho da História fundiu as culturas indígena, africana e europeia, o país tornou-se sui generis e profundamente sincrético. No Brasil colonial, os “cristãos-novos” se constituíram em produtores e grandes mercadores de cana-de-açúcar. Entretanto, perseguidos de morte pela Inquisição, eles tiveram de fugir. Alguns para além-mar, e muitos para dentro do continente, em direção à zona semi-árida do Sertão. Embora a “religião judaica”, em termos estritos, não tenha sobrevivido nesta região, a “religiosidade judaica” deixou profundos traços nos usos e costumes praticados pela população, muitas vezes ignorando sua procedência. Este estudo empírico coloca algumas questões teóricas.
Due to Brazil’s cultural traditions, mainly in the Northeast where History dissolved the indigenous, African and European cultures into a melting pot, the country has become sui generis and profoundly syncretic. In colonial Brazil the “New Christians” established themselves as producers and great merchants of sugar cane. In the meantime, they were persecuted to death by the Inquisition and had to flee. Some of them went overseas, while many set out into the interior of the continent, in the direction of the semi-arid Sertão region. Although the “Judaic religion” did not survive in this region, strictly speaking, the “Judaic religiosity” left profound traits in the population’s practices and customs. This empirical study poses some theoretical questions.
