The Linguistic Function of the Marker Steady in African American English

The aim of this paper is to describe the linguistic function of the marker steady in African American English and its link with the speaker’s involvement in productions which exhibit typical examples of steady as it is used by African American speakers. Interviews and songs provide authentic representations of Black English which is characterized as a nonstandard spoken version of the language because of marked differences from General American. Although African American English shares a number of features with other nonstandard varieties, syntactic patterns such as steady + V-ing are rule-governed, so it seems accurate to analyze the structure and its evolution in terms of grammaticality in this particular speech genre.
Cette étude se propose d’analyser le fonctionnement linguistique de l’opérateur steady en anglais africain américain et son lien avec l’engagement de l’énonciateur dans des productions où apparaissent des emplois typiques de steady par des locuteurs africains américains. L’étude s’appuie sur un corpus d’entretiens et de textes de chansons qui fournissent des représentations authentiques du parler noir, une forme orale non standard de la langue qui s’écarte notablement de l’anglais américain. Bien que l’anglais africain américain partage un certain nombre de traits avec d’autres variétés non standard, des schémas syntaxiques tels que steady + V-ing sont régis par des règles. Il semble par conséquent légitime d’analyser ce type de structure et son évolution en termes de grammaticalité dans ce genre discursif spécifique.
