La dénomination même «Âge d’argent » , vague et poétique, représente une sorte de «faîtage» qui couvre des phénomènes hétérogènes liés à la période entre 1880 et 1914. Néanmoins, cette dénomination définit avec assez de précision cette époque. La culture de l’Âge d’argent inaugure un nouveau type de culture, polycentrique et polyvalente. L’Âge d’argent est la première tentative de formuler de nouvelles lois de l’art et de la culture mises en oeuvre plus tard, à l’époque post-moderne, dans la seconde moitié du XXe siècle. Ces lois y ont reçu les noms de «système en déséquilibre» , de «rhizome» , de «chaosmos». L’Âge d’argent se conçoit comme ensemble de divers paradigmes culturels prenant la forme tantôt de courants et styles autonomes (symbolisme et modern style), tantôt celle des aspects particuliers repérables dans une oeuvre d’art. C’est le symbole qui confère à l’Âge d’argent une stabilité et une unité. Il devient cet outil qui réunit les éléments d’un système. Le symbole, sans être ni signe, ni image, se définit comme le «champ» à l’intérieur duquel les antinomies culturelles deviennent invalides.
The term “Silver Age” is unclear and poetical, but it can exactly show us the limits of the period 1880-1914 in Russia. The Silver Age explores the new type of polycentric and polyphonic culture. It is the first endeavor to create the new laws in art that were realized in avant-garde and post-modernism. The Silver Age is the synthesis of traditions and innovations, where Archaic style and mythologies in attitude stand near industrialism. Symbol as a universal category for all this age support fullness and stability for the Silver Age. Symbolism is the base for the world outlook of this age. The symbol is the instrument to create the system due to its nature. It isn’t a sign, neither cause, nor image. All these are its facets. That symbol is like a “field” where antinomies in culture vanish, objects and energy interact in time and space. Symbol is the tool of integration to create special “field”. The unity created by symbol isn’t homogeneous, but difficult and conflicting. This unity can be realized in painting by new spatial models, with a special understanding of light as a metaphysical substance, by the synthesis of nature and myths.
Термин «Серебряный век» расплывчат и поэтичен и всё же он достаточно точно очерчивает эпоху между 1880-ми годами и годом 1914. Серебряный века открывает новый тип культуры — многополярной и полифонической. Этот культурный период представляет собой первую попыткy сформулировать новые законы жизни искусства, реализованные затем в авангарде и постмодернизме. Устойчивость и единство Серебряному веку придает универсальная для всей эпохи категория — символ. В силу своей природы, символ является тем инструментом, который объединяет систему. Символ — не знак, не образ, и не мотив ; всё это лишь отдельные его грани. Символ имеет природу «поля» , в котором снимаются разноуровневые антиномии культуры. Символ невозможно вычленить из произведения символизма, оно целиком является символом. B живописи это единство реализуется с помощью новых пространственных моделей, особого понимания света, а также cинтеза натуры и мифа.
