« Filum meditandi »: Semiotics and Scientific Knowledge in the thought of G. W. Leibniz

RÉSUMÉ : Cet essai étudie la théorie leibnizienne de la characteristica universalis dans le contexte des théories gnoséologiques du philosophe. On fait allusion en particulier à la notion de 'pensée aveugle ou symbolique' et à la fonction de l'imagination. Après une comparaison avec les différentes conceptions de Bacon et de Descartes, on définit la nature proprement sémiotique de la théorie de Leibniz. Les considérations finales sont consacrées à son projet de réorganisation des sciences exposé dans le dernier chapitre des Nouveaux essais sur l'entendement humain.
ABSTRACT : This essay investigates Leibniz' theory of the characteristica universalis in the framework of his general gnosiological insights. Special attention is paid to the concept of 'blind or symbolic thought'as well as to the functions of 'imagination'. By means of a comparison with the different orientations of Bacon and Descartes, Leibniz' theory is clarified as properly semiotic in nature. Final considerations are devoted to his plan of reassembling scientific disciplines in the last chapter of Nouveaux essais sur l'entendement humain.
