Un conflit oublié : les rochers de mer de Chine méridionale / A forgotten conflict : the small rocky islands of the South China Sea

Après l'invasion chinoise des îles Spratley, en 1988, et le retrait des troupes vietnamiennes du Cambodge, l'ASEAN réalisa graduellement qu'une possibilité de conflit nouveau était en train de surgir et que la Chine étendait sa souveraineté sur la mer de Chine méridionale. Trop faible et divisée pour résister militairement à Beiging, l'Association choisit d'adopter une ligne de résistance diplomatique. Le Vietnam, pour des raisons géopolitiques, choisit d'adhérer à l'ASEAN et fut très vite admise dans le regroupement régional, à la surprise de nombreux observateurs. Pourtant, si le Vietnam et Singapour ont forgé un concept culturel et géographique régional qui pouvait décider la Chine à des revendications en mer de Chine méridionale, ce concept ne semble pas faire réagir les autres pays membres, à cause d'une très faible conscience collective.
After the Chinese invasion of the Spratley islands in 1988, and the withdrawal of the Vietnamese troops from Cambodia, ASEAN gradually realized that it had become a possible next target of China's will to extend its sovereignty in the South China Sea. Too weak and divided to resist militarily against Beiging, the Association chose to adopt a diplomatic line of resistence. Vietnam, for geopolitical reasons, also chose to become a member of ASEAN and rapidly was admitted into the regional grouping, to the surprise of many observers. However, if Vietnam and Singapore developed a cultural and geographical regional concept that could undermine China's claims to the South China Sea, this concept does not seem to appeal to other member countries, because of a still very weak collective consciousness.
