نبذة مختصرة : Abstract The catalogue of oceanic scenes to be found in Romano-Spanish art shows that they are much less numerous in Spain than in the neighbouring region of North Africa: eight mosaic pavements, a bronze relief and a stone statue. To this list can be added the lamp of Port-Vendres, found in a wrecked ship from Betica, and some Hadrianic coins connected with the sanctuary of Hercules at Cadiz. There is a great diversity in the rendering of the motif, about Ocean's aspect, and about his situation in the scenes using his figure. His presence can be interpreted from different points of view: mere ornament or evocation of the aquatic element, of the ancient river surrounding the world, of the great outer sea that stops the conquerors as they reach universal sovereignty. With the foreign influence on oceanic iconography, we note the originality of Romano-Spanish art in some of the decorative elements of mosaic pavements.
Resumen El catálogo de las representaciones de Océano en la Espana romana muestra que son mucho menos numerosas que en la region vecina de Africa del Norte: ocho mosaicos, un relieve de bionze, una estatua de piedra. Afiadimos una lucerna hallada en Port- Vendres, en un barco bético hundido y algunas monedas de Adriano que, tienen relación con el santuario gaditano de Hercules. Hay una gran diversidad en el tratamiento del motivo, por lo que se lefiere al aspecto de Océano, asi como a su situaciôn en las escenas que utilizan su figura. Su presencia puede ser interpretada de diversas maneras: mero ornamento o recuerdo del elemento acuâtico, del anciano rio que rodea el mundo, del gran mar exterior que detiene los conquistadores llegados a la supremacia universal. Con la influenciaextranjera sobre la iconografia del dios, se nota la originalidad del arte hispanoriomano en algunos elementos de decoración musivaria.
