Compositions have a high content of saturated or unsaturated isoparaffinic hydrocarbons with 12-24 carbon atoms and a polyalkyl (meth)acrylate. A method prepares said compositions to promote the raise of the flash point of hydraulic fluids where a good low temperature flow is important, e.g. compressor oils, shock absorber fluids, power steering fluids, and central hydraulic fluids.

- Claim:
1: A composition, comprising: (A) 5 wt. % to 80 wt. % of one or more solvent selected from the group consisting of saturated and unsaturated isoparaffinic hydrocarbons having 16-24 carbon atoms; and (B) 20 wt. % to 95 wt. % of a polyalkyl (meth)acrylate, comprising: (a) 5 wt. % to 25 wt. % of one or more C1-4 alkyl (meth)acrylates; (b) 75 wt. % to 95 wt. % of one or more linear or branched C8-15 alkyl (meth)acrylates; and (c) 0 wt. % to 0.5 wt. % of one or more linear or branched C16-20 alkyl (meth)acrylates.
- Claim:
2: The composition according to claim 1, wherein the saturated and unsaturated isoparaffinic hydrocarbons are selected from the group consisting of tetrabutane and tetrabutene.
- Claim:
3: The composition according to claim 1, wherein the solvent (A) is tetrabutene.
- Claim:
4: The composition according to claim 1, wherein the polyalkyl (meth)acrylate has a weight-average molecular weight in the range of 30,000 g/mol to 200,000 g/mol.
- Claim:
5: A method for the preparation of a composition according to claim 1, the method comprising: (i) preparing a monomer mixture, comprising: (A) 5 wt. % to 80 wt. % of one or more solvent selected from the group consisting of saturated and unsaturated isoparaffinic hydrocarbons having 16-24 carbon atoms; (B) 20 wt % to 95 wt % of a polyalkyl (meth)acrylate comprising: (a) 5 wt. % to 25 wt. % of one or more C1-4 alkyl (meth)acrylates; (b) 75 wt. % to 95 wt. % of one or more linear or branched C8-15 alkyl (meth)acrylates; and (c) 0) wt. % to 0.5 wt. % of one or more linear or branched C16-20 alkyl (meth)acrylates; and (C) optionally, a chain transfer agent; and (ii) charging 10 wt. % to 100 wt. % of the monomer mixture prepared under step (i) to a reaction vessel to form a reaction mixture; (iii) heating the resulting reaction mixture to a desired reaction temperature; (iv-1) adding 0.1 wt. % to 0.5 wt. %, based on the total amount of monomers used, of a free radical initiator stepwise to the reaction mixture, or (iv-2) adding 0.1 wt. % to 0.5 wt. %, based on the total amount of monomers used, of a free radical initiator to the reaction mixture and 0.1 wt. % to 1.0 wt. %, based on the total amount of monomers used, to the monomer mixture prepared under (i); (v) feeding continuously 0 wt. % to 90 wt. % of the monomer mixture prepared under (i) to the reaction vessel; (vi) optionally, after a reaction time of at least 1 hour, adding 0.2 wt. %, based on the total amount of monomers used, of a further shot of the initiator; (vii) holding the reaction mixture prepared under (v) for another 1 to 5 hours; and (viii) optionally, further processing of the reaction mixture to receive the targeted composition.
- Claim:
6: The method according to claim 5, wherein the saturated and unsaturated isoparaffinic hydrocarbons are selected from the group consisting of tetrabutane and tetrabutene.
- Claim:
7: The method according to claim 5, wherein the chain transfer agent is selected from the group consisting of n-dodecyl mercaptan, tert-dodecyl mercaptan, 2-ethylhexylthioglycolate and 2-mercaptoethanol.

8: The method according to claim 5, wherein the initiator is selected from the group consisting of azo initiators and peroxy compounds.
- Claim:
9: A method, comprising: preparing polyalkyl (meth)acrylates with a solvent, wherein the solvent comprises one or more saturated and/or unsaturated isoparaffinic hydrocarbons having 16-24 carbon atoms.
- Claim:
10: The method according to claim 9, wherein the saturated and/or unsaturated isoparaffinic hydrocarbons are selected from the group consisting of tetrabutane and tetrabutene.
- Claim:
11: The method according to claim 9, wherein the polyalkyl (meth)acrylates comprise: (a) 5 wt. % to 25 wt. % of one or more C1-4 alkyl (meth)acrylates; (b) 75 wt. % to 95 wt. % of one or more linear or branched C8-15 alkyl (meth)acrylates; and (c) 0 wt. % to 0.5 wt. % of one or more linear or branched C16-20 alkyl (meth)acrylates.
- Claim:
12: A method for preparing arctic hydraulic fluids with high flash points, the method comprising: (i) preparing a composition, comprising: (A) 5 wt % to 80 wt % of one or more solvent selected from the group consisting of saturated and unsaturated isoparaffinic hydrocarbons having 16-24 carbon atoms; and (B) 20 wt. % to 95 wt % of a polyalkyl (meth)acrylate, comprising: (a) 5 wt. % to 25 wt. % of one or more C1-4 alkyl (meth)acrylates; (b) 75 wt. % to 95 wt. % of one or more linear or branched C8-15 alkyl (meth)acrylates; and (c) 0 wt. % to 0.5 wt. % of one or more linear or branched C16-20 alkyl (meth)acrylates; and (ii) adding the composition prepared under (i) to a hydraulic fluid.
- Claim:
13: The method according to claim 12, wherein the saturated and unsaturated isoparaffinic hydrocarbons are selected from the group consisting of tetrabutane and tetrabutene.
- Claim:
14: A hydraulic formulation, comprising: (A) 1 wt. % to 40 wt. % of a solvent selected from the group consisting of saturated and unsaturated isoparaffinic hydrocarbons having 16-24 carbon atoms; (B) 50 wt. % to 89 wt. % of a further base oil different than component (A) and selected from the group consisting of highly refined hydrocarbon base oils of API Group III to V and mixtures thereof; (C) 10 wt. % to 25 wt. % of a polyalkyl (meth)acrylate comprising: (a) 5 wt. % to 25 wt. % of one or more C1-4 alkyl (meth)acrylates; (b) 75 wt. % to 95 wt. % of one or more linear or branched C8-15 alkyl (meth)acrylates; (c) 0) wt. % to 0.5 wt. % of one or more linear or branched C16-20 alkyl (meth)acrylates; and (D) 0 wt. % to 5 wt. % of one or more further additives.
- Claim:
15: The hydraulic formulation according to claim 14, wherein the one or more saturated and unsaturated isoparaffinic hydrocarbons are selected from the group consisting of tetrabutane and tetrabutene.
- Claim:
16: The hydraulic formulation according to claim 14, wherein component (D) is selected from the group consisting of conventional VI improvers, dispersants, defoamers, detergents, antioxidants, pour point depressants, antiwear additives, extreme pressure additives, friction modifiers, anticorrosion additives, dyes, and mixtures thereof.

17: The composition according to claim 1, comprising: (A) 20 wt. % to 45 wt. % of the solvent; and (B) 55 wt. % to 80 wt. % of a polyalkyl (meth)acrylate, comprising: (a) 5 wt. % to 25 wt. % of methyl methacrylate; (b) 75 wt. % to 95 wt. % of one or more linear or branched C12-15 alkyl (meth)acrylates; and (c) 0 wt. % to 0.5 wt. % of one or more linear or branched C16-18 alkyl (meth)acrylates.
- Claim:
18: The method according to claim 5, wherein in (i), the monomer mixture comprises: (A) 20 wt. % to 45 wt. % of the solvent; (B) 55 wt. % to 80 wt. % of a polyalkyl (meth)acrylate, comprising: (a) 5 wt. % to 25 wt. % of methyl methacrylate; (b) 75 wt. % to 95 wt. % of one or more linear or branched C12-15 alkyl (meth)acrylates; and (c) 0) wt. % to 0.5 wt. % of one or more linear or branched C16-18 alkyl (meth)acrylates; and (C) optionally, the chain transfer agent.
- Claim:
19: The method according to claim 8, wherein the initiator is tert-butylperoxy-2-ethylhexanoate or tert-amylperoxy-2-ethylhexanoate.

20: The method according to claim 12, wherein in (i), the composition comprises: (i) preparing a composition, comprising: (A) 20 wt. % to 45 wt. % of one or more solvents selected from the group consisting of saturated and unsaturated isoparaffinic hydrocarbons having 16-24 carbon atoms; (B) 55 wt. % to 80 wt. % of a polyalkyl (meth)acrylate, comprising: (a) 5 wt. % to 25 wt. % of methyl methacrylate; (b) 75 wt. % to 95 wt. % of one or more linear or branched C12-15 alkyl (meth)acrylates; and (c) 0 wt. % to 0.5 wt. % of one or more linear or branched C16-18 alkyl (meth)acrylates.
