Methods, devices, and systems employ cryolysis of oropharyngeal adipose tissues to selectively remove fat cells from the tissues causing obstructive sleep apnea. In various embodiments, a chilled liquid—e.g., a liquid or air—is applied to the target tissue at a temperature and for a duration sufficient to cause cryolysis.
- Claim:
1. A device for treating obstructive sleep apnea, the device comprising: an applicator including— a hollow interior portion having one or more baffles that at least partially define a flow path through the hollow interior portion, wherein the hollow interior portion is configured to receive a fluid; an inlet port fluidically coupled to the hollow interior portion; an outlet port spaced apart from the inlet port and fluidically coupled to the hollow interior portion; and an active surface distal to the hollow interior portion, wherein the active surface is thermally coupled to the hollow interior portion such that, in operation, heat from the fluid is transferred through the active surface, wherein the active surface includes a side having a convex shape.
- Claim:
2. The device of claim 1, wherein the side is a first side of the active surface, the active surface further comprising a second side, opposite the first side, having a concave shape.
- Claim:
3. The device of claim 2, wherein the second side includes an indented portion.
- Claim:
4. The device of claim 3, wherein the applicator is sized and/or shaped to be positioned at a soft palate of a patient such that the indented portion accommodates and/or avoids a uvula of the patient.
- Claim:
5. The device of claim 3, wherein the indented portion has a width within a range of 5 millimeters to 15 millimeters.
- Claim:
6. The device of claim 1, wherein the side is a first side of the active surface, the active surface further comprising (i) a concave second side opposite the first side, (ii) a convex third side between the first side and the second side, and (iii) a convex fourth side between the first side and the second side that is opposite the third side.
- Claim:
7. The device of claim 1, wherein an entirety of a perimeter of the active surface is curved.
- Claim:
8. The device of claim 1, wherein the active surface is generally planar.
- Claim:
9. The device of claim 1, wherein the active surface includes a first dimension extending laterally across a width of the active surface and a second dimension, normal to the first dimension, extending laterally across a height of the active surface, wherein the first dimension is greater than the second dimension.
- Claim:
10. The device of claim 1, further comprising a side surface extending proximally from the active surface toward at least one of the inlet port or the outlet port.
- Claim:
11. A device for thermally treating a soft palate of a patient, the device comprising: an applicator including— a hollow interior portion configured to receive a fluid; an inlet port fluidically coupled to the hollow interior portion; an outlet port spaced apart from the inlet port and fluidically coupled to the hollow interior portion; an active surface distal and thermally coupled to the hollow interior portion, wherein the active surface includes a curved perimeter, and wherein the active surface includes a long axis extending along a width of the active surface and a short axis normal to the long axis; and a side surface extending proximally from the curved perimeter of the active surface.
- Claim:
12. The device of claim 11, further comprising an applicator handle coupled to a proximal end portion of the applicator, wherein the applicator is coupled to the applicator handle such that an angle between the applicator and the applicator handle is adjustable.
- Claim:
13. The device of claim 11, further comprising an applicator handle coupled to a proximal end portion of the applicator, wherein the applicator is coupled to the applicator handle such that the applicator is movable independent of the applicator handle.
- Claim:
14. The device of claim 13, further comprising: an inlet tube coupled to the inlet port, wherein the inlet tube is configured to direct the fluid to the applicator toward the active surface; and an outlet tube coupled to the outlet port, wherein the outlet tube is configured to direct the fluid from the applicator away from the active surface, wherein: the inlet tube and the outlet tube are parallel to one another, the applicator is positioned above or below the inlet tube and the outlet tube.
- Claim:
15. The device of claim 11, wherein the active surface includes a first side having a convex shape and a second side, opposite the first side, having a concave shape.
- Claim:
16. The device of claim 11, wherein the active surface includes a first side having a convex shape and a second side, opposite the first side, having an indented portion.
- Claim:
17. The device of claim 16, wherein the indented portion has a width within a range of 5 millimeters to 15 millimeters.
- Claim:
18. The device of claim 11, wherein the active surface includes a first side, and a second side, opposite the first side, having an indented portion, wherein the applicator is configured to be positioned at a soft palate of a patient such that the indented portion accommodates and/or avoids a uvula of the patient.
- Claim:
19. The device of claim 11, wherein the active surface comprises (i) a convex first side, (ii) a concave second side opposite the first side, (iii) a convex third side between the first side and the second side, and (iv) a convex fourth side between the first side and the second side that is opposite the third side.
- Claim:
20. The device of claim 11, wherein the active surface is generally planar.
