      A journal editor is usually the liaison officer between a scientific journal and the scientists who want to publish their results. I share here my experience from eight years of acting as a topical editor for one of the open access journals of the European Geosciences Union (EGU). The particular public open access review process of EGU's open access journals is presented. I focus on the data and code accessibility requirements of the journal and the evolution of the related policies during the time of my service, emphasizing on their strengths and shortcomings.
