      The basic aim of this work consisted in make a brief theoretical approach to the importance of illustration in the education of visual literacy of children, emphasizing the materiality of children's books. More specifically, it has been made a comparative analysis of the materiality of the book A Flor Vai Pescar Num Bote, from Alves Redol, based on the illustrations of the first edition (1986), compared with the most recent edition of the same title (2006). This survey was implemented with a group of students, of the 4th level, from the Basic Education Schools of Penacova, focusing, thus, on the work fulfilled by them, in a comparative analysis of the materiality of the two books concerned.
      O objectivo inicial deste ensaio consistiu em fazer uma breve abordagem teórica à importância da ilustração na educação da literacia visual das crianças, destacando a materialidade do livro infantil. Mais especificamente, foi feita uma análise comparativa da Materialidade do livro A Flor Vai Pescar Num Bote, de Alves Redol, tendo por base as ilustrações da 1.ª edição (1986), comparativamente com a edição mais recente do mesmo título (2006). Este levantamento foi implementado com um grupo de alunos, do 4.º ano de escolaridade, do 1.º Ciclo do Ensino Básico, do Agrupamento de Escolas de Penacova, incidindo, assim, sobre os trabalhos realizados pelos mesmos, na análise comparativa da materialidade dos dois volumes em causa.
