The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Photograph Collection largely consists of black and white 8'x10" photographs which were used in the union's publications, the "Machinists Monthly Journal" and later, the "Machinist." The Photograph Collection includes the following IAMAW-related subject matter: Locals, Districts, Officers, Anniversaries, Conventions, Conferences, Ladies Auxiliary, strikes, the Machinists Non-Partisan Political League, and Machinists at work on trains, tanks, aircraft, missiles, etc. Additional subject matter includes the AFL-CIO, other unions, union/labor leaders, world leaders, political figures, religious leaders, current events, and celebrities. Of note are extensive files on Gerald Ford, Hubert Humphrey, missile construction, the Convair Corporation, the Machinists Non-Partisan Political League, and the Ladies Auxiliary.
The United Machinists and Mechanical Engineers of America was founded in 1888. In 1889, the name changed to the National Association of Machinists. Two years later, it became known as the International Association of Machinists and in 1965, this was changed to the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers.
