UM451. At a special meeting of the Executive of the Professorial Board on the 20th of May 1966, it was proposed that a Standing Committee on Policy be created as a source of effective advice to the Board on academic policy, priority and planning. Its role was to assist the Board in formulating policy recommendations for consideration by Council and to recommend ways of achieving policy objectives. The committee would have the right to request investigations and reports from any of the sub-committees or other committees of the Board on any matter of Academic Policy. It would also consider and report back on any matter referred to it by the Board or by one of its sub-committees. The committee would report to the Board, but it would also have delegated discretion to work closely with Council and Council's committees. The first meeting of the committee was held on the 13th of September 1966.The committee was reformulated (with no change of its role) as the Academic Board Steering Committee from the 1st of January 1990 and was eventually abolished on the 31st of December 1994.
