      Civil War uniform consisting of a coat and pants is made of navy blue wool. The coat is cut straight and loose, has a narrow turn-down collar, and buttons up the center front with five brass buttons. The pants have a button fly and six buttons around the waistband for attaching suspenders. The fit of the pants adjusts with a buckled strap at the center back, just below the waistband.

      This uniform was originally owned and worn by Lieutenant Colonel Frank W. Cheney (1832-1909) of Manchester, who served with the 16th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry. Colonel Cheney was wounded in the Battle of Antietam on September 17, 1862 and lay wounded on the battlefield for four days.
