Ginecologia, gênero e sexualidade na ciência do século XIX

Este artigo trata do surgimento da ginecologia durante a segunda metade do século XIX, procurando evidenciar, por um lado, a singularidade histórica dessa especialidade no campo da medicina e, por outro, a sua justificativa ideológica. A ginecologia se apresenta como o ramo da medicina dedicado ao estudo da mulher e se constitui a partir da noção de que o corpo e o papel social femininos são determinados pela função procriativa. É com base na idéia de que o comportamento da mulher é gerenciado pela sexualidade, diferentemente do homem, que a ginecologia institui o direito de intervir muito além dos órgãos reprodutivos propriamente ditos, convertendo-se, não sem pretensões, em uma verdadeira ciência da mulher.This article deals with the emergence of gynecology during the second half of the 19th century. It seeks to show, on the one hand, the historical singularity of this speciality in the field of Medicine and, on the other hand, its ideological justification. Gynecology presents itself as the field of Medicine devoted to the study of women and is founded upon the notion that the female body and social roles are determined by the reproductive function. It is based on the idea that the behaviour of women, differently from men's, is dictated by sexuality, that gynecology institutes the right to intervene far beyond the reproductive organs themselves, becoming, not without pretensions, a true science of women.
