Predstavljanje terena i zemljišnih oblika uopšte na konvencionalni način klasičnim topografskim kartama bilo je mnogo teže nego predstavljanje ma kog drugog elementa kartografskog sadržaja. Pojavom GIS tehnologija stvoreni su povoljniji uslovi za kreiranje i predstavljanje prirodnog i prostornog izgleda reljefa. Digitalni model terena (DMT) predstavlja savremeni metod visinskog predstavljanja zemljišta i reljefnih oblika. Nastao je sa razvojem računarske tehnike i čini osnovu modernih geografskih informacionih sistema. Na osnovu DMT-a, kroz algoritamsku analizu morfometrijskih parametara reljefa, omogućen je kvalitativno nov način sagledavanja prostornih odnosa i reljefnih svojstava, što obezbeđuje kvalitetniju, višestruko bržu i racionalniju vojnu analizu terena. / The Digital Terrain Model (DTM) is nowadays defined as a modern method for presenting heights of land and relief shapes. It has emerged with the development of computer technology and is the basis of modern geographic information systems. The DTM is a mathematical model of a large number of points on the surface of terrain where it is possible to perform various mathematical analyses. According to its organization structure, the best known and the most frequently applied models of terrain are models of surface terrain based on the grid (raster) structure and digital models based on the TIN (Triangulated Irregular Network) data structures.
