نبذة مختصرة : Teaching botany for basic education, even though it is extremely relevant, may have obstacles to be overcome, with the theme “Algae” being the most adverse. University extension projects for application in basic education assume particular relevance to disseminate knowledge on this topic. In this sense, the present work had as general objective to understand the importance of the application of extension projects in the schools and classroom of the disciplines of Science and Biology for the Elementary and High School, expanding the learning and knowledge about algae. For this, a theoretical reference was sought, as well as a documentary research, where data were collected from the extension project "Alga is not garbage, it is luxury" and a bibliographic search in the databases: Google, Google Scholar, Scopus , among others, collecting works that approached themes about the importance, form of use and use of algae in the educational routine. In the results, it was possible to describe the practical activities developed at the Botany Laboratory of the Federal University of Alagoas, Campus A.C. Simões, observing specimens of microalgae and macroalgae, as well as all the dynamics that involved an extension project, making the learning of the content considerable. With this extension project “Seaweed is not trash, it's luxury”, it was possible to clarify the theme of environmental education and algae for basic education students from public and private schools in a playful and didactic way, contributing to the Teaching of Science and Biology. ; Lecionar botânica para a educação básica, mesmo sendo de extrema relevância, pode possuir obstáculos a serem passados, sendo o tema “Algas” o mais adverso.
