In contemporary society, subtle cues in our daily interactions often reflect prevailing stereotypes surrounding mental health, and perpetual societal stigmas. Despite increasing awareness, media representations continue to shape public perceptions, often blurring the line between demonization and glamorization. This thesis investigates how popular culture influences attitudes toward mental health. Through qualitative research methods, including in-depth interviews with young adults, the study delves into the impact of media representations on personal perceptions. By analyzing themes and stereotypes prevalent in diverse media forms, the research aims to uncover the driving mechanisms by which societal perceptions of mental illness are shaped. Through thematic analysis, the study explores variations in perceptions among individuals with lived experiences of mental health challenges. It also examines the role of celebrities and public figures in reducing the stigma surrounding mental health. Ultimately, this research provides a clear understanding of the intersection between popular culture and mental health stigma, aiming to foster greater social awareness and advocacy for positive representations.
