نبذة مختصرة : This work aims to describe clinical and utilitarian aspects of the ELMO helmet. This is a theoretical essay developed from August 2021 to March 2022. Scientific texts were adopted as inclusion criteria that presented in the title the expression "HELMET ELMO" and in the abstract addressed the clinical and/or utilitarian issues about the equipment. Search strategies were applied in the Virtual Health Library (VHL), National Library of Medicine (PubMed) and Scientific Electronic Library Online (Scielo). Noninvasive ventilation was seen as an option to avoid orotracheal intubation and its complications, avoiding the rapid spread of the virus, reducing the risk of aerosolization and contamination of health professionals. The ELMO helmet has strongly valued its use, significantly improving oxygenation. Additionally, it has been shown to be viable and effective in delivering continuous positive pressure in high-flow airways (CPAP) in patients with acute respiratory failure (AKI), caused by COVID-19 outside the intensive care unit (ICU). Its use was considered comfortable and no excessive adverse effects were observed. In the city of Fortaleza, about 60% of the people who used the technology did not need to be intubated, a fact that earned it national awards, among them the title of most innovative project at the 9th Brazilian Congress of Industry Innovation, in 2022. The use of the ELMO helmet demonstrated decisive effects for the efficacy of the treatment of patients affected by COVID-19, as well as the dispensation of invasive mechanical ventilation (intubation), preventing its harmful consequences ; Este trabalho pretende descrever aspectos clínicos e utilitários do capacete ELMO.
