      Although indigenous arts have always been present, with great diversity and sophistication, among peoples all over the world, they only began to be included in art history and exhibited in the Western art system from the second half of the 20th century onwards. In Brazil, the process was even later, with a particular effervescence in the last ten years, with great indigenous protagonism. However, the ways of collecting and exhibiting indigenous works within the art system are complex and thorny, ranging from ethical issues to techniques for preserving things that are often made to be ephemeral. They involve ontological misunderstandings and language barriers. They encompass decisions about how to identify and contextualise exhibition elements. They require cultural translation efforts and respect for the visibility regimes specific to each object and image - what can be seen, by whom. They require rapprochement between curatorship and mediation/education. It was with these challenges in mind and the lack of forums to discuss them that we set out to bring together, in this dossier, reflections on indigenous art exhibitions and collections in/of Latin America. After all, the projects have multiplied, but the memories about them often end up being restricted to the people directly involved. We were also interested in stimulating reflections that moved between the history of art, anthropology, museology and other neighbouring disciplines, and that put side by side indigenous and non-indigenous thought.
