This paper is devoted to an elaborate analysis of The Winter of Our Discontent as a novel that depict the detrimental effects of capitalism in the Americans life in terms of consumerism and conformism. Through the images and portraits he created for The Winter of Our Discontent, Steinbeck described a changing world where the common people were caught in a precarious situation, and unfortunately, they were being sacrificed for the sake of progress. Steinbeck was familiar with the economic forces that affected people's lives. He comprehended them both from the need to make his country economically strong but also from the personal side as people’s morality suffered as the victims of capitalism.
