      More than a musical genre, rock is a culture, with its own rituals and modes of representation. Its emergence coincided with that of television in the 1960s, bringing lasting upheaval to the cultural and media industries. This correlation helped to make rock a culture torn between rebellion and industrial conformism, in constant need of visual attachments. The aim of this research paper is to take a fresh look at the heyday of rock and to gain a better understanding of its characteristics, using contemporary and current notions of media studies.The media practices of the two groups chosen, Pink Floyd and The Who, will be analyzed in the light of rock's ambiguous foundations. The objects explored will range from televised performances and promotional films to album covers and feature films.A chronological study will allow to envisage a quest for artistic legitimacy that cuts across the two groups' media strategies. Starting with the 1960s, the relationship between rock and television will be seen as both a springboard and a means of intermedia expression. The following decade will show the multiple media strategies possible for various artistic and audiovisual projects. Their relationship with cinema will be crucial to understanding how rock wishes to position itself in the expanding media galaxy. Finally, the 1980s will provide an opportunity to discuss the decline of the two groups and of rock as a whole, which may have manifested itself in disillusionment and nostalgia in two postmodern films. ; Plus qu'un genre musical, le rock est une culture, avec ses propres rituels et modes de représentation.
