Hypertension and inter-arm blood pressure difference are blood pressure disorders associated with a high risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Data on the epidemiology of these risk factors and their consequences are scarce in sub-Sahara Africa, particularly in Benin. This thesis aimed to study the importance of blood pressure disorders, their consequences and their management in the rural population of Benin. This thesis was based on data from the TAnve HEalth Study cohort. This is a cardiovascular cohort set up in the villages of Tanve and Dekanme in southern Benin since 2015. It includes adults from both villages who gave their consent to participate in the study. The prevalences of abnormal kidney function and inter-arm blood pressure difference were estimated as well as the associated factors. The use of care was assessed in the cohort participants with severe hypertension or other cardiovascular diseases. The prevalence of inter-arm blood pressure difference was estimated to be 19% and that of abnormal renal function 16%. Hypertension and diabetes were the main factors associated with inter-arm blood pressure difference and abnormal kidney function. We observed a low rate of care seeking among the cohort participants referred for severe chronic diseases. Blood pressure disorders are common in our study population with significant impact; this supports the need for effective interventions to control hypertension as a modifiable risk factor.
