Characterization of pregnancies and births of teenage

Objective: to characterize the pregnancies and births for teenage mothers in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, reported in the Information System on Live Births (SINASC) from 2000 to 2009. Method: a descriptive epidemiological study, retrospective, with a quantitative approach. Data collection occurred after signing of the term institutional authorization of the secretary of state of public health of Rio Grande do Norte. We used data of live births to teenage mothers between the years 2000 to 2009 of SINASC this state. Data analysis was performed with the aid of Microsoft Office Excel® 2010 and based on the literature from the topic. Results: the following variables prevailed: birth occurrences in a hospital environment (92.24%); term births (92.06%); 1-6 prenatal consultations (62.60%); single pregnancy (98.83%); vaginal births (73.24%); no live births (75.56%) or previous miscarriages and/or abortions (96.84%). Conclusion: despite the favorable results in relation for the variables studied, the rate of teenage mothers remains high; health policies for this age group must be reconsidered for the variables studied. Método: estudo epidemiológico descritivo, retrospectivo, com abordagem quantitativa. Para a coleta de dados, utilizaram-se as informações dos nascidos vivos de mães adolescentes, notificados no Sistema de Informações sobre Nascidos Vivos (Sinasc) no Estado do Rio Grande do Norte-RN, no período de 2000 a 2009. A tabulação dos dados foi realizada com o auxílio do Programa Microsoft Office Excel® 2010 com apresentação em tabelas e as informações foram discutidas com respaldo na literatura.
